In July 2000, Val and Larry Culp were set to transform Carlsborg’s ancient watering hole, the Keyhole Tavern, into Val’s stained glass studio. Then Val, a former waitress and accomplished cook, had an epiphany.
“I took another look around and decided we couldn’t let that beautiful old bar go to waste.” They decided to open a café instead and spent two hard years turning the old Keyhole into the unique, well-appointed restaurant it is today. Larry, a skilled craftsman, remodeled the old tavern in homage to the now defunct Carlsborg Lumber Mill across the road. The result is stunning. Val’s gorgeous stained-glass pieces highlight the striking sawmill décor.
